Carolyn Altman has accepted the nomination to represent PAAC for 2016-2018! Please extend a warm welcome to Ms. Altman. We look forward to working together to support Parent Representation in Juvenile Courts throughout Georgia.
In her own words…
I work primarily in the Juvenile Court of Douglas County with a caseload of 70-90 active cases. The majority of my clients are parents, although I also represent children, private petitioners, and serve as a guardian ad litem. Since 2008, I represent parents in all stages of dependency proceedings from PPH to TPR and appeals. I have submitted approximately twenty appeals, done oral arguments before the Court of Appeals, and have approximately 200 hours of CLE in child welfare law, delinquency, family law and adoption. I accept cases in Douglas, Paulding, Carroll counties.
For 2016-2018, first, I envision broadening and strengthening the ListServ and trainings by identifying and including more parent attorneys. By contacting juvenile courts and identifying which attorneys are on the parent attorney list, we can send out individual invitations to those attorneys who are not involved in PAAC.
Second, we identify a few counties and work to form a collaborative of parent attorneys within that individual county. I believe many parent attorneys feel disenfranchised and/or marginalized from meaningful systemic change/input because we do not work for an agency or group office; most of us are solo practitioners. As PAAC, we can spend some time within the counties and with the parent attorneys & learn what is working/what is not, suggestions for improvement, ways of raising the bar of parent-representation – that are distinct to that jurisdiction.
